Zero Tolerance and Screening processes

focus has a zero tolerance to abuse and neglect.

We are required to undertake background screening in accordance with the Department of Health and Human Services Safety Screening Policy and legislative requirements.

Our responsibilities

The safety and wellbeing of the people that we support is taken very seriously at focus. As an organisation we have a duty of care to prevent abuse and neglect.

Pre-employment screening

All staff must undergo a series of pre-employment checks prior to being offered a role. These checks include a police check at the national and international level (if the person has lived overseas for more than 12 months in the last 10 years) which checks for any criminal records.

We also check against the Disability Worker Exclusion Scheme which lists people who have been demonstrated to pose a proven risk to the health, safety or welfare of people with a disability living in shared supported accommodation. If someone is listed on this register they will not be offered employment with us.

All employess are required to have completed the NDIS Worker Orientation Module ‘Quality Safety and You’ and must comply with the NDIS Code of Condut at all times.

Zero Tolerance to Abuse Policy

Focus endorses the Zero Tolerance initiative.  This means we do not tolerate any form of abuse, neglect, intimidation or exploitation and are committed to recognising, raising and responding to any disregard from the human rights of people we support.

The Zero Tolerance is an initiative led by National Disability Services in partnership with the disability sector. It aims to assist disability service providers to understand, implement and improve practices which safeguard the rights of people they support. Built around an evidence-based framework, it outlines strategies for service providers to improve prevention, early intervention and responses to abuse, neglect and violence experienced by people with disability. An expanding range of Zero Tolerance tools and resources for the disability sector are available to support broader safeguarding approaches for people with a disability.
